The opposition Democratic Party of Albania has called for a major protest to take place in central Tirana in front of the prime minister's office on the morning (local time) of Saturday, March 16, to demand fresh elections and call for the departure of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Opposition leaders have also called for similar demonstrations to take place nationwide.

Further protests are possible in Tirana and other urban centers across the country over the near term. Associated clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out. A significant police presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near any protest sites.

Opposition supporters have held several demonstrations in Tirana in recent weeks outside of the parliament building to denounce perceived government corruption and demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama. Security forces have fired water cannons and tear gas to disperse demonstrators in recent weeks.

Clashes between protesters and police were reported during a related demonstration in Tirana on February 16, with demonstrators throwing Molotov cocktails and attempting to storm the building that houses the office of Prime Minister Rama (Kryeministria). At least 15 people were wounded. Demonstrations also took place outside parliament on March 5, ending without major incident.

Individuals in Albania, particularly in Tirana, are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
