South Africa: Train derails in Boksburg (Gauteng province) March 12

South Africa News Alert

Train derailment near Elandsfontein station (Boksburg, Gauteng province) leaves at least 16 people injured; lingering rail disruptions expected over coming hours

TIMEFRAME expected from 3/12/2019, 12:00 AM until 3/14/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Johannesburg). COUNTRY/REGION Boksburg

A Metrorail commuter train reportedly derailed near the Elandsfontein train station in Boksburg (Gauteng province) shortly after 16:00 (local time) on Tuesday, March 12. According to local reports, at least 16 passengers sustained minor to moderate injuries when three train cars derailed. The cause of the derailment remains unclear. Associated train disruptions are to be anticipated in the area over the coming hours.

Management of the rail network is often criticized by South Africans who denounce the insufficient funds allocated to this sector. Mechanical problems at times make the service unreliable. Some 200 people were injured after a train derailed in Germiston (Gauteng province) in January 2018. Authorities attributed the cause of the accident to vandalism and theft of rail clamps.

Individuals in Gauteng province are advised to confirm train schedules, allow for extra time to reach their destinations, and seek alternative means of transportation when necessary.
