Event

Significant flight disruptions are ongoing in Colorado state as of the evening (local time) of Wednesday, March 13, due to blizzard conditions. Denver International Airport (DEN) canceled more than 1300 flights and closed all runways by 13:30 on Wednesday. Winds of up to 129 kph (80 mph) were recorded at the airport and icy conditions caused numerous accidents on Peña Boulevard leading up to DEN. Colorado Governor Jared Polis declared a state of emergency and National Guard units have been deployed to assist stranded motorists. Officials closed large sections of Interstate 70 and Interstate 25 due to blowing snow and drivers are being encouraged to stay off the roads. Blizzard conditions are expected to continue overnight into Thursday, March 14. Further flight cancelations and delays are likely at DEN and adverse driving conditions, including limited visibility, icy roads, and congestion, is expected across the state.

The storm is also forecast to affect eastern Wyoming and western portions of Kansas, Nebraska, and South Dakota, including Cheyenne and Rapid City. Power outages and transportation disruptions, including flight cancelations and delays, are also likely in these areas.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas, particularly those flying through DEN, are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm their flight status, anticipate significant transportation disruptions, avoid unnecessary travel, and maintain flexible itineraries.
