An improvised explosive device (IED) targeting a passenger train in Balochistan killed at least three people and wounded three others on Sunday, March 17. The bomb was set on the rail tracks and detonated as the Jaffar Express passenger train, which runs from Rawalpindi to Quetta, passed the Dera Murad Jamali area of Balochistan. The train derailed and a portion of the track was damaged. Rail disruptions are expected in the coming hours and days.
The Pakistani government continues to struggle to contain the ongoing separatist movement in the province, largely spearheaded by the Baloch Liberation Army. The security situation thus remains highly precarious due to the activities of various Baloch insurgent groups as well as several active terrorist groups.
Individuals in or traveling through Balochistan are advised to remain vigilant at all times and report any suspicious behavior or objects to the relevant authorities.
Due to a high threat from terrorism, as well as kidnapping and sectarian violence throughout Pakistan, some Western governments advise their citizens against nonessential travel to the country as foreign nationals, and in particular Westerners, may be directly targeted.
