The Colombian Federation of Education Workers (FECODE) is planning a nationwide strike from Tuesday, March 19, through Wednesday, March 20. Teachers are protesting the proposed National Development Plan, which they claim does not take previous agreements with the union into account. Associated demonstrations are planned throughout the country including in Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, Bucaramanga, and Montería. The largest rally is set to take place on March 20 in Bogotá, starting at 09:00 (local time). Delegations of teachers from many of the departments are expected to gather at the Parque Nacional before marching to Plaza de Bolívar. Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected around all protest sites.
FECODE held a similar strike in mid-February to protest the underfunding of public education. Teachers are also calling for improvements to the availability of medical services for themselves and their families.
Individuals in Colombia are advised to avoid all protests as a precaution and allow for additional time to reach their destinations.
