A complex attack by suspected Maoist rebels, also known as Naxalites, left one paramilitary soldier dead and at least five others wounded in the Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh state on Monday, March 18. An improvised explosive device (IED) detonated around 16:30 as members of the Central Reserve Police Force were conducting a patrol, which was followed by gunfire. Further security operations are possible in the area in the coming days; additional attacks by insurgents, including bombings, in southern Chhattisgarh cannot be ruled out.

The Maoist insurgency has been active for several decades in rural areas of the states of Chhattisgarh, Jharkand, Odisha, Bihar, and West Bengal, as well as in the border region around Andhra Pradesh. An estimated 6000 people have died in the past 20 years, though activities have decreased recently due, in part, to a security crackdown. Restrictions on the movement of foreigners are in place for some rural areas of eastern India, including parts of Chhattisgarh.

Individuals in Chhattisgarh are advised to monitor developments to the situation, adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. travel restrictions), and remain vigilant for militant activity, particularly if planning on traveling to rural areas.
