Thousands of rural farmers (campesinos) are slated to stage a demonstration in Asunción on Thursday, March 21. According to organizers, participants will gather at Seminario Park from 08:00 (local time) and march to Plaza Uruguaya for a rally at 10:00. A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions are to be expected along the march route. Clashes between protesters and police are possible, particularly if protesters erect roadblocks. Further demonstrations by campesinos are possible in the coming weeks.
On March 20, thousands of campesinos began marching to Asunción from municipalities throughout Paraguay, primarily from cities in San Pedro, Concepción, and Canindeyú departments, to protest agricultural policies that leaders claim favor corporate interests.
Individuals in Asunción are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
