Authorities announced the closure of Sir Gaëtan Duval Airport (RRG), also known as Plaine Corail Airport, on Mauritius' eastern island of Rodrigues on Tuesday, March 26. Tropical Cyclone Johaninha is expected to pass over the island on Tuesday, producing 204 kph (127 mph) sustained winds and waves of up to 11 m (35 ft). Residual flight disruptions are expected in the coming days following the passage of the storm. Power outages, flooding, and other transportation disruptions, including road closures, are also possible in the coming hours and days.
Mauritius experiences an annual cyclone season from November through April, during which time tropical storms and torrential rain can result in significant material damage.
Individuals in or traveling to Rodrigues are advised to monitor local weather reports, postpone nonessential travel, and anticipate severe weather, power and telecommunication outages, and transportation disruptions (e.g. flight cancelations, road closures).
