Unidentified gunmen launched an attack targeting a truck transporting Egyptian workers near Bir al-Abd (North Sinai province) on Tuesday, March 26, killing at least ten people. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack; Islamic State - Sinai Province (IS-SP) militants are active in the province and may have carried out the assault. Similar attacks are possible in North Sinai province over the coming days.
The attack comes as security forces continue to carry out counterterrorism raids in the area under the auspices of "Comprehensive Operation - Sinai 2018," which aims to neutralize militant and terrorist groups operating in the Sinai Peninsula, Nile Delta, and the Western Desert. The targets of the raids are not confirmed by independent reporting and foreign tourists have previously been killed in similar operations.
Individuals in Egypt are advised to refrain from travel to North Sinai province, remain vigilant for militant activity, report suspicious objects and behavior to police, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
