Local sources indicate unidentified assailants opened fire on an NGO convoy in Croix-des-Bouquets (Ouest department) on Wednesday afternoon (local time), March 27. Unconfirmed reports indicate the driver of the convoy sustained fatal gunshot wounds and at least one attacker was killed by security forces. Senior diplomatic officials from the Chilean Embassy were reportedly on board one of the vehicles at the time of the attack.
A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of the incident over the coming hours. Avoid the area.
Individuals in Haiti, particularly in the abovementioned area, are advised to remain vigilant, report suspicious objects and behavior to the police, follow instructions issued by local authorities, and take security precautions (e.g. keep signs of wealth concealed, drive with doors locked and windows rolled up, avoid walking alone, avoid traveling in isolated urban areas at night, etc.). As criminals are often armed, do not attempt to resist would-be attackers or thieves and give up all demanded objects to avoid escalating the situation.
