Police forcibly disperse protest in Karachi March 28; heightened security presence implemented and localized traffic disruptions expected over the coming hours

Police forcibly dispersed protesting teachers in Karachi on Thursday, March 28, who were reportedly calling for changes in government educational management and promotion schedules. At least 2000 demonstrators gathered at Karachi Press Club and were dispersed by police armed with batons, tear gas, and water cannons when they attempted to march toward the Chief Minister's House (Red Zone); some 150 demonstrating teachers were reportedly wounded by police, who also arrested up to 200 protesters.

A heightened security presence has been implemented around the Chief Minister's House and on MT Khan Road. Localized traffic disruptions are to be expected in the area over the coming hours. Similar protests are possible in Karachi over the near term.
