Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) election rally in Siliguri (West Bengal state) on Wednesday, April 3. The event will take place near the New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in the south of the city. A heightened security presence, crowded conditions, and localized disruptions are expected near the campaign site on Wednesday. Clashes between supporters of rival political groups cannot be ruled out. Further campaign events are expected throughout West Bengal and other parts of India in the lead up to Lok Sabha parliamentary elections in April and May.
India is scheduled to hold general elections beginning April 11. Voting in West Bengal will take place on April 11, 18, 23, 29 and May 6, 12, and 19. Siliguri will hold its elections on April 18.
Individuals in Siliguri, and West Bengal and India more generally, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all political demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate disruptions and a heightened security presence, and refrain from discussing political topics in public or on social media.
