Government officials declared a state of emergency in Asunción on Wednesday, April 3, due to ongoing flooding in the capital. National Emergency Minister Joaquin Roa announced a 90-day emergency on Wednesday due to heavy flooding along the Paraguay River and its tributaries in recent weeks. Tens of thousands of people, mainly in the Bañado Sur neighborhood of the capital, have been affected by the floodwaters, which are expected to continue to rise in the coming days. Protests to demand more government action in response to the flooding were held along Avenida Costanera. Further flooding and associated disruptions, including road closures and other transportation disruptions, are likely in the coming days and weeks.

Individuals in Paraguay, particularly Asunción, are advised to monitor flood levels and local weather alerts, anticipate road closures and other transportation disruptions, and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain chemical products and wastewater; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
