Event

Suspected Taliban militants reportedly staged several attacks across Afghanistan targeting security outposts on Saturday, April 6, killing at least seven people. Militants attacked security outposts in Ghazni province, killing at least three policemen and wounding seven others, while insurgents raided a security checkpoint in Sar-e Pol province, killing four policemen. In Nangarhar province, militants carried out twin bombings, wounding three civilians.

During the evening (local time) on Saturday, unconfirmed reports claim militants carried out a bombing in the PD-4 district of the capital Kabul. No casualties were immediately reported. Similar attacks are likely in across Afghanistan in the near term.

Context

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. The assaults are in part intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country and to gain leverage in the ongoing peace negotiations. The Taliban concluded peace negotiations with US diplomats on Tuesday, March 12. The US stated that progress was made but no agreement was in place.

Advice

Individuals in Afghanistan are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to instructions and advice issued by their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
