Protests and violence erupt in Amhara region April 6-8; avoid all gatherings

Hundreds of people are protesting in Debre Berhan (Amhara region) as of Monday, April 8, to denounce recent violent incidents in the cities of Ataye, Dessie, and Kombolcha. Local sources indicate that members of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) rebel group attacked the abovementionned cities on April 6-7, in addition to communal violence that reportedly erupted in the seareas. At least four people were reportedly killed in the violence. Further such protests and violence are possible in the coming days and weeks. 


Individuals present in the Amhara region are advised to monitor the situation, avoid any large gatherings and demonstrations due to the risk of violence, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities or their home government.
