Heavy rains led to flooding in the capital Kampala and Jinja (Eastern region) on Tuesday morning (local time), April 9. The heavy rainfall brought traffic to a standstill, leaving portions of Jinja Road (Kampala), such as Lugogo Bypass, flooded. Local authorities reported that the Clock Tower junction was also flooded. Flooding in Jinja reportedly left many people stranded.
Jinja Road has since been cleared and normalcy has returned. Further heavy rainfall is possible over the coming weeks, as well as consequent flooding and traffic disruptions.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate flooding and associated transportation and business disruptions (including due to road closures), and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of moving water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
