Nationwide festivities associated with Pi Mai, or Lao New Year, will take place from Sunday, April 14, through Tuesday, April 16. Several events are expected in Luang Prabang province beginning Friday, April 12, and lasting until Wednesday, April 17. Parades and celebrations, often involving water fights, are likely in Vientiane. Crowded conditions and disruptions to transportation along with commercial and government services are likely during the holiday period.


Pi Mai, also known as Loa New Year or Songkran, is traditionally celebrated over three days beginning April 13 or 14.


Individuals in Laos are advised to adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, respect local customs, and anticipate business, government, and transportation disruptions, crowded conditions, and increased demand for hotels and transportation services.
