Islamic State (IS) militants ambushed and killed ten pro-government Liwa Al-Quds fighters in the Bir 'Ali area of the Mayadin Desert (Deir Al-Zor province), per reports on Sunday, April 14. Similar IS attacks targeting pro-government forces are possible in Deir Al-Zor province over the near term.
Though IS has lost virtually all the territory it once controlled in Iraq and Syria after suffering major military defeats following its 2014 offensive, the militant group still routinely carries out deadly attacks in the countries.
Due to extremely poor security conditions, Western governments generally advise against all travel to Syria, with some banning travel to the country completely. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to any travel to Syria.
