Airport authorities will close the main runway at Chileka International Airport (BLZ) in Blantyre (Southern region) from Wednesday, April 24, to Monday, July 24. The runway will undergo reconstruction during the period. Smaller planes will be able to use a secondary runway but large aircraft will be diverted to Kamuzu International Airport (LLW) in the capital Lilongwe (Central region).
In January, South African Airways suspended flights to BLZ due to safety concerns.
Individuals traveling to southern Malawi are advised to monitor developments to the situation, make alternative travel plans, and anticipate flight disruptions (e.g. diversions, cancelations, etc.).
