Two airport staff unions, the General Union of Workers (UGT) and the Workers' Trade Union (USO), are planning to hold two strikes on Sunday, April 21, and Wednesday, April 24. An estimated 60,000 airport ground staff may participate in the work stoppages, which is expected to result in congestion and delays at Spanish airports. The unions are demanding worker protection be written into contracts. Further strikes are possible in the coming weeks should negotiations not resume.
Spain celebrates Easter on Sunday, April 21, and crowded conditions at transportation hubs are already expected on Easter and in the following days.
Individuals traveling through Spanish airports are advised to monitor the situation, allow additional time at airports, and anticipate congestion and delays for all airport services.
