The Tunisian Union of Individuals Taxis (UTTI) is calling for taxi drivers to hold a nationwide strike on Monday April 15 to protest against the hike in fuel prices announced by the government. Citywide disruptions are expected in Tunis and the taxi station at Tunis-Carthage International Airport (TUN) is reportedly closed. Demonstrations and roadblocks were reported in Mghira, Denden and Bizerte. The highways connecting Tunis to the northern governorates and entry points to North of Tunis, Bizerte and Sousse were also blocked. However, taxi drivers belonging to the Tunisian Union of Industry, Commerce and Handcrafts (UTICA) will remain in service throughout the day. Significant traffic disruptions are expected around all protest sites
The Tunisian government implemented a four percent fuel price increase on Monday April 1, which prompted protests in several cities nationwide.
Individuals in Tunisia, particularly in Tunis, are advised to monitor the situation. It is advised individuals allow additional time to travel, and should expect disruptions to taxi services and increased congestion on alternative modes of transportation during protest actions
