Suspected militants reportedly opened fire on police conducting a security operation in Hayatabad, outside Peshawar, (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province) as of 22:15 (local time) Monday, April 15. At least one policeman and one militant were killed in the incident, according to early reports. The militants subsequently barricaded themselves inside a housing unit and are surrounded by police, who have established a perimeter around the building.
A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are expected in Hayatabad over the coming hours. Further clashes are possible for the duration of the security operation.
Individuals present in and around Peshawar, and Pakistan more generally, are advised to remain vigilant at all times and report any suspicious objects or behavior to the relevant authorities. Due to a high threat from terrorism, as well as kidnapping and sectarian violence, some Western governments advise their citizens against nonessential travel to the country as foreign nationals, and in particular Westerners, may be directly targeted.
