Lawyer across Burkina Faso launched a 96-hour strike on Tuesday, April 23. The lawyers have suspended all participation in court hearings through Friday, April 26, to protest perceived dysfunctions within the judicial system. An associated protest march is also expected to take place in Ouagadougou on Monday, April 29. Other related demonstrations are possible throughout the country in the coming days. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are anticipated around all protest sites.

Context

The lawyers decided to go on strike following a general meeting by the Bar Association on Monday, April 22. According to the organization, there have been serious interruptions to judicial activities since October 2018, including significant delays for hearings involving minor crimes. Other issues include families no longer being allowed to visit relatives in prison and human rights violations.
