Tanzanian president John Magufuli is making an official state visit to the Malawian capital Lilongwe on Wednesday, April 24 and Thursday, April 25. Malawi state officials said Malawian president Peter Mutharika and Magufuli will discuss bilateral cooperation and will inaugurate the 2019 tobacco marketing season together. A heightened security presence and traffic disruptions are expected during the visit. Temporary road closures are likely.
This is the first official visit to Malawi by President Magufuli since he took office in 2015. It comes as a border dispute remains between the two countries over Lake Malawi dating back to the colonial era.
Individuals in Malawi, particularly in Lilongwe, are advised to monitor situational developments, anticipate a heightened security presence and traffic disruptions, allow additional time to travel, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities.
