Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX), Beijing's second planned international airport and the largest single-building airport terminal in the world, is scheduled to begin operations on Monday, September 30. The airport's opening will follow nearly four years of construction. The airport will also be accessible via high-speed rail from 28 cities, although it is unclear when rail services will be available to travelers.
The opening of Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) comes amid an initiative in airport construction. Chinese officials plan to build or expand at least 74 airports nationwide by 2020 to accommodate roughly 720 million passengers per year. Officials responsible for the planning of Beijing Daxing International estimate that the airport will accommodate 72 million passengers per year by 2025 and ultimately 100 million passengers per year.
Individuals traveling via Beijing are advised to monitor the situation, confirm the status of their flight, and maintain a flexible itinerary.
