A suicide bombing attack killed at least eight people in the Jameela marketplace area in Sadr City (Baghdad) on Thursday, May 9. The assailant reportedly blew himself up while surrounded by security forces. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the blast.
Similar attacks are possible in Baghdad over the near term.
While former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory over the Islamic State (IS) group in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq.
Individuals in Baghdad are advised to monitor developments, avoid the affected area, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
