Event

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit 28 km (17 mi) northeast of Kokopo (East New Britain province) on Tuesday, May 14. Early reviews of the earthquake indicate there is no threat of a tsunami.

Initial damage reports were not available as of 23:00 (local time); however power, telecommunication, and transportation disruptions are possible. Further aftershocks and associated damages are possible in the coming hours and days.

Individuals in East New Britain province are advised to be prepared for aftershocks, anticipate transportation, telecommunication, and power disruptions, and to adhere to instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. road closures, evacuation notices).
