The US National Weather Service (NWS) issued a winter storm warning for areas of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California state effective from Wednesday, May 15, to Friday, May 17. A late season snowstorm is expected to bring 15-30 cm (6-12 in) with localized amounts up to 60 cm (24 in) from Wednesday evening (local time) to Friday morning. High winds are also possible and may result in significantly reduced visibility. Transportation disruptions are possible, particularly in mountain passes, along with chain controls and regulations.
Individuals in or traveling through the Sierra Nevada mountains are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. road closures, chain laws), and anticipate transportation disruptions, including traffic congestion, limited visibility, and other adverse driving conditions.
