The CNTE (National Coordination of Education Workers) teachers' union is planning to hold a march in Mexico City on Wednesday, May 15, to protest government educational reforms. Protesters will gather at Metro San Cosme at 10:00 (local time) before marching to Plaza de la Constitución. Teachers in other states including Guerrero, Oaxaca, Michoacán, and Chiapas are expected to hold similar marches in major urban areas. The CNTE has also organized a 72-hour nationwide strike from Wednesday through Friday, May 17. Further demonstrations are possible during the work stoppage. A heightened security presence and associated traffic disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of the protest sites.
Similar protests have been organized by the CNTE in recent months to oppose the passage of the educational reforms by state congresses.
Individuals in Mexico, particularly Mexico City, advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid all demonstrations and protests as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
