Demonstrations are possible in Yerevan on Saturday, May 18, amid the trial of former President Robert Kocharyan. The Courts of First Instance of General Jurisdiction is expected to deliver a ruling on whether Kocharyan will be granted bail at 16:00 (local time). 

A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are anticipated in Yerevan on Saturday. Further demonstrations by supporters of Kocharyan are possible in the near term.

Context

Former President Robert Kocharyan, who was arrested in December 2018, is facing charges of "overthrowing the constitutional order of Armenia" and bribery during his term as president. Kocharyan is accused of being complicit in the deaths of 10 people during post-election demonstrations in 2008.
