Event

A 6.3-magnitude offshore earthquake hit 179 km (111 mi) east of Tadine (Loyalty Islands province) at approximately 02:20 (local time), on Monday, May 20. No damages or casualties were immediately reported. Further aftershocks and associated damages are possible in the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals in Loyalty Islands province are advised to be prepared for aftershocks, anticipate transportation, telecommunication, and power disruptions, and to adhere to instructions issued by local authorities (e.g. road closures, evacuation notices). In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves from falling debris if indoors, to move away from windows, and not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
