The Peruvian government confirmed that at least five people sustained injuries related to the 8.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Loreto region at 02:41 (local time) on Sunday, May 26. Officials indicate the earthquake caused significant structural damage in Yurimaguas (Loreto region) and Tarapoto (San Martín region), where a bridge along a highway reportedly collapsed. Power outages were also reported in cities in the Amazon basin. Disaster management teams are being deployed to affected areas; further details are likely to emerge as the government continues to assess the extent of the damage. 

Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.


The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded an 8.0-magnitude earthquake that struck Loreto region at 02:41 (local time) at a depth of 110 km (62 mi). The earthquake was felt across Peru and in Ecuador and Venezuela. 


Individuals in the affected areas, particularly Amazonian regions of Peru, Ecuador, and western Brazil, are advised to prepare for aftershocks, anticipate power, telecommunication, and transportation disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves from falling debris if indoors, to move away from windows, and not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
