Security forces arrested nine people in connection with a series of explosions in Kathmandu on Sunday, May 26. According to local sources, seven people reportedly affiliated with the Communist Party of Nepal were arrested with explosive materials on Sunday, while two others were arrested after an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated prematurely in Chandragiri, injuring them. Police reportedly found additional "suspicious objects" in Sanepa and Gwarko districts (Kathmandu) and deployed explosives teams to examine the objects. 

The Communist Party of Nepal has called for a nationwide general strike (banda) on Monday, May 27. Associated demonstrations are expected in Kathmandu and other urban centers. A heightened security presence, commercial disruptions, and associated transportation disruptions are likely on Monday. Similar attacks are possible over the near term.

Context

Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) detonated in Kathmandu on May 26, killing at least four people. According to local sources, an IED detonated at a residence in Ghattekuolo area, killing one person, while another explosive device detonated in the Sukedhara area, killing two others. Unconfirmed sources claim the local officials believe the attacks may have been linked to the Netra Bikram Chand-led Communist Party.
