Heightened security measures are expected in main Pakistani cities as Shia Muslims celebrate Youm-e-Ali on Monday, May 27. Processions, religious speeches, and other public gatherings are held in Karachi (Sindh province), Lahore (Punjab province), and other cities in Pakistan. Significant disruptions are expected throughout Monday, including checkpoints, road closures, security operations, restrictions on motorcycle passengers, and increased deployment of plainclothes and uniformed security personnel; telecommunication disruptions are also possible.

In Karachi, the procession will begin at Nishtar Park at 13:00 (local time) and lead to Imambargah Hussanian Iranian Kharadar at 20:00. Other processionals are planned in Sukkur (Sindh province), Rawalpindi (Punjab province), and Lahore.


Youm-e-Ali commemorates the death of Hazmat Ali, the fourth caliph, and is celebrated by Shia Muslims.
