Kenya: Anti-corruption protests planned in Nairobi May 31-June 1

Kenya News Alert

Anti-corruption groups plan protests in Nairobi on May 31 and June 1 during Madaraka Day celebrations; localized disruptions and heightened security presence likely

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/27/2019, 12:00 AM until 6/1/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Nairobi). COUNTRY/REGION Nairobi, narok County

Anti-corruption political groups are calling for protests in Nairobi on Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1, coinciding with Madaraka, or Independence, Day celebrations. The "Kenya for Kenyans Movement" is planning a protest in central Nairobi's Jeevanjee Gardens on Friday. The following day, the "Beyond Zero Corruption" organization will hold a demonstration in Uhuru Park at 10:00 (local time). A heightened security presence along with localized transportation disruptions are likely during the events. Clashes with security forces cannot be ruled out.

Official Madaraka Day events will be held in Narok (Narok county) to the west of Nairobi. Disruptions, crowded conditions, and heightened security measures are likely.

The "Kenya for Kenyans Movement" previously attempted to hold a protest in Nairobi's Uhuru Park but was forcibly dispersed by security forces.

Individuals in Nairobi and Narok are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all demonstrations due to the risk of violence and arrest, and anticipate localized transportation disruptions and a heightened security presence.
