Uganda: Flooding causes traffic disruptions in Kampala May 26-27

Uganda News Alert

Heavy rains cause flooding and traffic disruptions in Kampala May 26-27; severe weather forecast in the coming days

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/27/2019, 12:00 AM until 5/30/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Kampala). COUNTRY/REGION Uganda

Heavy rains led to flooding in the capital Kampala on Sunday, May 26. The heavy rainfall brought traffic to a standstill, leaving portions of Jinja Road, as well as the Bwaise, Kawempe, Nabweru, Clock Tower, and Kyambogo areas, flooded. Significant transportation disruptions persist as of Monday, May 27. Further heavy rainfall is forecast over the coming days, as well as consequent flooding and traffic disruptions.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate flooding and associated transportation and business disruptions (including due to road closures), and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of moving water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater and chemical products; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
