Security forces clashed with suspected militants in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir state on Wednesday, May 29, during ongoing security operations. At least one gunman was killed during the firefight, which occurred in the early morning (local time) on Wednesday. Mobile internet services were reportedly suspended in the district. A heightened security presence, transportation disruptions (e.g. road closures, checkpoints), and telecommunication disruptions are likely in the coming days in Kulgam and other areas of Kashmir. Similar security operations and possible clashes between security forces and suspected militants are expected in the near term.
Separatists have been fighting Indian rule in Kashmir since 1989. Some 70,000 people have died and many more have been injured in related violence, uprisings, and military crackdowns.
Individuals in Kashmir are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid the affected area, anticipate telecommunication and transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
Some Western governments advise their citizens against travel to parts of Kashmir, notably including areas along the Line of Control (LoC), due to the significant risk of violence.
