Spain: Protest against new local government in Madrid June 1

Spain News Alert

Political demonstration to take place in Madrid June 1; heightened security presence and transportation disruptions expected

TIMEFRAME expected from 5/29/2019, 12:00 AM until 6/1/2019, 11:59 PM (Europe/Madrid). COUNTRY/REGION Madrid

A demonstration is slated to take place in Madrid on Saturday, June 1, to denounce the formation of a right-wing local government that includes the far-right Vox political party. Participants will gather at Plaza de Cibeles at 19:00 (local time).

Heightened security measures and localized traffic disruptions are expected near the demonstration site.

Mayor Manuela Carmena has announced she will resign following the May 26 local elections in which she received 30.9 percent of votes - the highest single total - but was defeated by a right-wing coalition. José Luis Martínez-Almeida of the Popular Party (PP) is set to be the new mayor with the support of Ciudadanos and the far-right Vox party. While Carmena's Más Madrid won 16 of the city's 21 districts, the right-wing coalition narrowly defeated the leftist party by 101,000 votes in the overall vote total.

Individuals in Madrid are advised to monitor developments, anticipate localized disruptions and heightened security presence, and avoid all demonstrations as a precaution.
