Canada closed its embassy in Venezuela on Sunday, June 2, according to Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland. All operations were suspended immediately and for an indefinite period. Consular services will be provided through the Canadian embassy in Bogotá (Colombia).
Canada advises its citizens to avoid all travel to Venezuela due to the significant level of violent crime, unstable political situation, and shortages of medication, food, water, and gasoline.
Individuals in Venezuela or in need of Canadian consular services are advised to contact Global Affairs Canada, seek assistance from the Canadian embassy in Colombia, and adhere to instructions issued by their home government.
