Mauritania: First day of Eid al-Fitr observed June 4

Mauritania News Alert

First day of Eid al-Fitr observed in Mauritania June 4; celebrations mark end of the holy month of Ramadan

TIMEFRAME expected from 6/4/2019, 12:00 AM until 6/7/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Nouakchott). COUNTRY/REGION Mauritania

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan came to an end in Mauritania at sundown on the evening (local time) of Monday, June 3, with the first day of Eid al-Fitr observed Tuesday, June 4. Operations across the country will come to a virtual standstill during the multi-day holiday as Muslims gather to pray and celebrate with family and friends. Eid al-Fitr celebrations are likely to have a major impact on many businesses, stock exchanges, and public services, which may be unavailable or operating on a reduced schedule. Festivities (and disruptions) could continue for several days. As this period is typically marked by increased travel, heavy road traffic after sundown along with other transportation disruptions (crowded airports, etc.) is to be anticipated.

Eid al-Fitr celebrates the conclusion of a month of dawn-to-sunset fasting and is one of the most important dates on the Muslim calendar.

Individuals in the country are advised to adhere to cultural customs, remain vigilant, and avoid large public gatherings. Travelers during this period are advised to allow additional time to reach their destination and avoid any forms of public gatherings or demonstrations.
