Thousands of people staged anti-government protests in Port-au-Prince and demanded the resignation of President Jovenel Moïse on Sunday, June 9. Police fired tear gas to disperse demonstrators near the National Palace and at least one person was killed from a gunshot wound. Protesters erected roadblocks and set fires in the streets. Protests were reported in Delmas, Bel Air, and Champs de Mars near the National Palace. An increased security presence and disruptions from the protests are expected to continue for the coming hours. Further anti-government and anti-corruptions protests are possible in the coming days and weeks.

Numerous demonstrations have been staged in recent months to call for greater government transparency after several public officials, including President Jovenel Moïse, were implicated in a scandal related to the alleged misuse of PetroCaribe funds. Protesters have been calling for Moïse to step down from the presidency.

Individuals in Haiti are advised to monitor developments to the situation, avoid unnecessary travel, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities.
