The PIT-CNT national trade union has called for an indefinite strike and sit-in protest in front of Petrobras offices at Plaza Independencia in Montevideo beginning Monday, June 10, to support gas workers involved in an ongoing labor dispute with Petrobras. The PIT-CNT trade union also earlier called for another 24-hour strike to begin on Tuesday, June 25, in solidarity with natural gas workers.
Associated disruptions to transportation and business are to be expected due to the strikes and protest activity until an agreement is reached between the sides.
The PIT-CNT, or Plenario Intersindical de Trabajadores - Convención Nacional de Trabajadores, has 120,000 members in Uruguay. The strikes come before national elections scheduled Sunday, June 30.
Individuals in Montevideo and across Uruguay are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, and anticipate increased traffic congestion and disruptions to business, government services, and transportation.
