The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is planning to hold a demonstration in Kolkata (West Bengal state) on Wednesday, June 12, to protest post-election violence in the state. Party workers and members are expected to gather at Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar where they will hold a gherao, or lock-in protest where demonstrations will block access to or from the building. Participants will march to Lalbazar from various locations, though primary meeting places will be at Howrah and Sealdah railway stations. Transportation disruptions are expected near Lalbazar and along march routes. A heightened security presence is likely and clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
West Bengal state has witnessed several incidents of post-election violence, largely between BJP and All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters. On Saturday, June 8, a gunfight between the rival groups left four people dead and 18 others wounded.
Individuals in Kolkata, and West Bengal more generally, are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations, anticipate a heightened security presence and transportation disruptions near any protest sites, and refrain from discussing politics in public or on social media.
