The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is calling for nationwide protests on Tuesday, June 11, after former President Asif Ali Zardari was arrested on money laundering charges. Demonstrations will be held in Karachi (Sindh province) at Hassan Square and in Lahore (Punjab province) at nine different locations. The rallies follow a night of protests and roadblocks across Pakistan, particularly Sindh province, that resulted in transportation and commercial disruptions. Similar disruptions are expected on Tuesday along with a heightened security presence; clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out. Further protests are possible in the coming days.

Context

Former President Asif Ali Zardari was arrested in connection with money laundering charges on Monday, June 10. Zardari served as president from 2008 to 2013 and is the co-chairman of the PPP.
