Significant flooding is ongoing in eastern Jiangxi province as of Monday, June 10. At least 1.42 million people in the province have been affected by the flooding, including in the cities of Ji’an and Shangrao. According to disaster officials, at least 135,000 residents have been relocated and emergency personnel have deployed throughout the province to assist local governments. Local media reported that at least six people have been killed since the start of the flooding. Further heavy rain is forecast in Jiangxi through Tuesday, June 11. Additional material and infrastructure damage and associated transportation disruptions are expected in the coming days.
Individuals in Jiangxi province are advised to monitor flood levels and local weather alerts, anticipate road closures and other transportation disruptions, and remember that walking or driving through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain chemical products and wastewater; all items having come into contact with floodwater should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
