Tropical Cyclone Vayu formed on Tuesday, June 11, in the Arabian Sea and is expected to strengthen to a Severe Cyclonic Storm by Tuesday evening (local time). The storm is forecast to continue moving up the west coast of India and affect western Gujarat state by Wednesday evening, June 12, bringing 12.5-25 cm (5-10 in) of rain with localized amounts up to 38 cm (15 in) from Wednesday until Friday, June 14. Moderate rains are forecast in Mumbai (Maharashtra state) on Tuesday and Wednesday.
As of 08:30 on Tuesday, the storm was located 532 km (330 mi) south-southeast of Mumbai and producing sustained winds of 93 kph (58 mph). Vayu is forecast to strengthen to winds of 167 kph (103 mph), or the equivalent of an Atlantic Category 2-hurricane, by Wednesday afternoon.
Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, and anticipate severe weather and associated transportation and power disruptions.
