Indian authorities are preparing to evacuate 300,000 people from coastal areas of Gujarat state on Wednesday, June 12, ahead of the expected landfall of Tropical Cyclone Vayu in the early hours (local time) of Thursday, June 13. Vayu is forecast to continue strengthening in the coming hours and make landfall near Porbandar with sustained winds of 175 kph (110 mph). Rainfall of up to 20 cm (8 in) and a storm surge of 1.5 m (5 ft) is likely. Disruptions to power, telecommunications, and transportation services, along with wind damage and flooding, are expected in western Gujarat state. Less severe but inclement weather is possible in other areas of Gujarat, including Surat, Rajkot, and Ahmedabad, as well as Mumbai (Maharashtra state).

As of 02:30 on Wednesday, Vayu was located 310 km (193 mi) southwest of Mumbai and producing sustained winds of 140 kph (86 mph), or the equivalent of a Category 1 Atlantic hurricane.
