A 6.5-magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Coquimbo on June 13; no tsunami warning immediately issued

Event

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.5-magnitude earthquake approximately 79 km (49 mi) off the coast west of Coquimbo on Thursday, June 13. According to initial reports, the quake hit at 20:19 (local time) at a depth of 10 km (6 mi). No damages have been reported and no tsunami warning has been issued as of 20:39. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.

Advice

Individuals near the affected areas are advised to be prepared for aftershocks and to adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves from falling debris if indoors, to move away from windows, and not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
