Mali: Protests planned in Bamako June 21

Mali News Alert

Protests in Bamako on June 21 to denounce intercommunal violence in central Mali and relocation of G5 Sahel headquarters to Bamako; avoid all gatherings

TIMEFRAME expected from 6/21/2019, 12:00 AM until 6/22/2019, 11:59 PM (Africa/Bamako). COUNTRY/REGION Bamako

Multiple protests are scheduled to take place in Bamako on Friday, June 21, to denounce intercommunal violence in central Mali, perceived government inaction to address persistent insecurity in the region, and the installation of the G5 Sahel headquarters in the capital. Protesters are expected to gather at 14:00 (local time) at Place de la CAN in ACI 2000, Monument de l'Independence, Bourse du Travail, and Badalabougou near the G5-Sahel Headquarters.

A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the protest sites over the coming hours. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

41 members of the Dogon ethnic community were killed in Yoro and Gangafani (Mopti region; centre) on June 17-18.

Furthermore, protesters argue the relocation of the G5 Sahel headquarters to the capital is likely to attract militant activity to the area.

Individuals in Bamako are advised to monitor developments, avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.
