Hundreds of climate activists occupied the Garzweiler coal mine on Saturday, June 22, to protest the continued operation of the mine. Police reportedly halted the protesters from moving further into the open-cast mine. Thousands also participated in a related protest denouncing the planned expansion of the mine in nearby Keyenberg on Saturday.
Similar demonstrations calling for action on climate change issues are to be expected across Germany on Fridays. A heightened security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected near demonstration sites.
The demonstrations come amid the "FridaysforFuture" movement, an international student movement initiated by Greta Thunberg, a teenage Swedish climate activist, demanding more effective government action on climate change issues.
Individuals in Germany are advised to avoid all protests and demonstrations as a precaution, anticipate localized transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
